The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is an absolute diamond in the rough in Apopka, Florida that attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world who are in the know. This 11-mile dirt road takes you through beautifully restored wetlands that are home to an abundance of critters, including at least 377 resident and migratory bird species, making it one of the top birding destinations in the state. In addition to birds, you're almost guaranteed to see Florida's most popular reptile, the American alligator. If you're lucky, there are various mammals and other animals you may spot in the area as well.
While driving is the most common mode of transportation here, the road can also be biked or hiked. Additionally, a free audio tour is available that will teach you everything you need to know about the wetlands! Whatever method you choose, remember to stay vigilant and watch out for pedestrians and wildlife. This is not a road for going fast, and people will frequently stop their vehicles to get out and take photos. Thankfully, there are multiple pull-off and passing areas. There are also portable restrooms stationed in a couple spots along the road. If you're in the area, this is one place you won't want to skip! I'd highly recommend a visit.
