Avalanche Falls is a magnificent, 45-foot cascade located inside Flume Gorge, or "The Flume," as many refer to it as. The Flume is a 200-million-year-old natural gorge roughly 12 feet wide at its narrowest, 90 feet high at its tallest, and 800 feet long, extending from Mount Liberty in New Hampshire's White Mountains. This awesome canyon, made of Conway granite and basalt, was discovered accidentally by 93-year-old Jess Guernsey in 1808. In June of 1883, a massive rainstorm caused a landslide that ultimately created Avalanche Falls inside the gorge along Flume Brook.
To reach this waterfall, you'll need to purchase tickets to the gorge, preferably online, as walk-ins are only accommodated if the park has not yet reached capacity. From the the parking area, you'll encounter a visitor center and gift shop on the right and a ticket booth and trail on the left. Present tickets at the booth to gain access to the 2-mile loop trail which will take you to see Table Rock, Avalanche Falls, and Liberty Gorge Cascade.
