Graveyard Fields is a popular hiking area along the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 418.8. A sign at the trailhead explains the name:
"Wind-thrown tree trunks covered with moss and spruce needles looked like a graveyard until destroyed by a fire in 1925."
What makes the area so popular? Aside from all the trails, there are two impressive waterfalls. Upper Falls is a spectacular 40-foot cascade, while Second Falls drops 70 feet across multiple tiers.
To reach the falls, park in the parking area and take the trail on either side of the lot. The Graveyard Fields Loop Trail will take you to Second Falls on the east side of the loop. On the west side of the loop, you'll find the route to the Upper Falls. Hiking to both will total about 4 miles. However, direct out-and-back routes will be roughly 1 mile and 3.6 miles in total for Second Falls and Upper Falls, respectively.
This area is popular. Despite its large parking area, it is known to fill up quickly, so early weekday visits are typically the best way to beat the crowds. There are also restrooms available.
