Deep within the Virgin Falls State Natural Area in Sparta, Tennessee is Sheep Cave Falls. This 90-foot, cascading waterfall drops into a cave, eventually coming out at an undisclosed location. This cave is known to house bats and is off-limits to hikers in order to protect the bats from White Noise Syndrome. Accessing Sheep Cave Falls is best done as a side-quest during the trek to the more spectacular Virgin Falls. Adding Sheep Cave Falls will bring that hike to roughly 9 miles. However, the most direct route will total 8 miles. During this hike, you may also encounter Big Branch Falls and Big Laurel Falls, which is super cool in its own right!
Be advised: reaching the parking area requires travel down an unpaved road, and the hike to the falls can be considered strenuous. Camping is permitted in the area via reservation. Plan accordingly.
