Tucked away deep inside the Virgin Falls State Natural Area in Sparta, Tennessee is the majestic namesake, Virgin Falls. This 110-foot, cascading beauty requires a strenuous 4.3-mile trek through the wilderness to reach, but the journey is well worth it. The water here comes from an underground stream that emerges from a cave further upstream, which hikers can also trek to. Even better, designated camping spots are located right near this waterfall but require reservations. During this hike, hikers may also encounter Big Branch Falls and Big Laurel Falls. A side trail will also take you to Sheep Cave Falls, extending the hike by roughly half a mile.
If you are looking to hike to this waterfall and back in one day, plan for a 5 to 8 hour trip, as the hike is considered strenuous. Additionally, reaching the parking area requires travel down an unpaved road. Plan accordingly.
