Nestled 2.4 miles into the Virgin Falls State Natural Area in Sparta, Tennessee is Big Laurel Falls. This spectacular waterfall is a 20-foot, free-falling waterfall that drops into a cave, where the water disappears back underground. Water levels may vary, and it looks rather unassuming from the front. Where the beauty of this waterfall really shines is from inside the cave. The cave is roughly 60 feet deep and 200 feet wide. From inside behind the falls, hikers can see the world from a whole different perspective peering out into the wilderness. Big Laurel Falls is definitely an all-time favorite of mine, and if you have the time, I would definitely recommend it! During this hike, you may also encounter Big Branch Falls. You can also extend the hike to see Sheep Cave Falls and Virgin Falls.
Be advised: reaching the parking area requires travel down an unpaved road, and the hike to the falls can be considered strenuous. Camping is permitted in the area via reservation, but not inside the cave. Plan accordingly.
