Bear Creek Falls is a spectacular, 200-foot, free-falling, roadside waterfall along the Million Dollar Highway in Ouray, Colorado. This popular roadside stop provides a small parking area and an observation deck, so the falls are easily visible. The views from the deck are incredible as well. The Million Dollar Highway refers to a 25-mile stretch along Highway 550 that was built in the 1880's and paved in the 1920's. Its name is believed to stem from a combination of ideas. First, the views from the road are "million-dollar" views. Second, due to its many twists and turns, some locals joke that they would need to be paid a million dollars to drive it. Third, some suspect each mile of road cost a million dollars to construct. Whatever the case the 40-minute drive is well worth it to see Bear Creek Falls, stunning views, cute mountain towns, and great hiking trails!
