Flowstone Falls is an 80-foot, dormant, underground waterfall inside the Big Room of Tuckaleechee Caverns. This room measures 400 feet wide by 150 feet tall and is one of the largest subterranean rooms in the eastern US. Calcite deposits from the flowing water built up over millions of years. Eventually these deposits built up so much that the flow of water became blocked, causing the waterfall to become dormant. Unlike many waterfalls that carve through rock, Flowstone Falls's slow flow caused rock to be built up instead. Today, this formation is believed to be around 15 million years old.
To access this ancient waterfall, take the guided tour, which lasts roughly 60-90 minutes and covers 1.5 miles.
