Lower Sols Creek Falls is a 120-foot hidden gem tucked within the Nantahala National Forest on Bear Creek Lake in North Carolina. Located on private property, this majestic cascade can only be publicly accessed by boat. The paddle across the mountain lake is filled with incredible views.
To reach the falls, begin by parking at the public boat ramp on the north end of Bear Creek Lake. There is a large parking lot with plenty of spaces for trailers. You'll also find signage about boating at Bear Creek Lake, some non-flush restrooms, and a short boardwalk leading to an overview of the lake.
From the ramp, you'll paddle southeast for about 2 miles until you come to an island at the south end of the lake. Turn left to go north for another 0.3 miles. You will eventually hear the sound of rushing water grow louder as you approach where Sols Creek meets the lake. You may also see the top of the waterfall peeking out from above the tree line. Once you reach the creek, it will become inaccessible, but you'll find a rock with a little dirt area on the right side where you can park your kayak. You may be able to hold it in place with some low hanging tree branches, but I would recommend bringing a rope.
From the dirt area, which will act as the trailhead, you'll hike 0.3 miles parallel to Sols Creek. This is a short but very strenuous path with no blazes or signage. At points you may feel like you're going the wrong direction, but keep going, and follow the sounds of the water. Eventually the falls will come into view once again. You'll know when you've arrived.
