The deceptively named Little Sam Falls is a massive waterfall hidden along Sam Branch near Canton, North Carolina in the Pisgah National Forest. This is one that definitely gives a locals-only vibe. Other posted heights online list this waterfall at 40 feet, but realistically that depends on where you assume it ends. This waterfall could easily be classified as 80+ feet. There is no official trail to reach it. Instead, a small parking area off NC-215 gives access to an overgrown and littered use trail that descends steeply into the gorge.
Once at the bottom, you'll find yourself at the top of an unnamed sliding cascade along the West Fork Pigeon River. Cross the river and make your way up Sam Branch. The cove where it offshoots should be visibly identifiable. You'll then come to a fork that leads to falls in both directions. Go left for Little Sam Falls. Go right for Lower and Middle Wildcat Falls. Some creek walking, crouching under trees, and rock hopping may be required. As such, I'd classify this hike as strenuous even though it is fairly short. Sam Branch splits apart a few times. Follow a map to make sure you're staying along the correct river. As you approach Little Sam Falls, you'll ascend a large rock that will bring the falls into view. Little Sam Falls can then be seen carving its way down the rock.
