On the far east side of DuPont State Recreational Forest is a small, often-forgotten waterfall that does not appear on the forest website's "Waterfall Map." On this map, Grassy Creek Falls is the easternmost waterfall. Nevertheless, nestled further along Grassy Creek is another peaceful waterfall by the name of Wintergreen Falls. This waterfall is accessible via a 1.6-mile hike from the Guion Farm Parking Area.
DuPont State Forest has a fascinating history. In the year 2000, North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt used his council's power of eminent domain to prevent a real estate development from being established in the middle of the forest, protecting this beautiful, natural gem. The state of North Carolina then acquired the land and has since protected it. Now this waterfall, along with others in the area, have helped to make the park a major natural attraction.
Other waterfalls in the park include High FallsTriple Falls, Hooker Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Grassy Creek Falls. The area is especially beautiful during the fall from late October to early November.
